Where to buy brewing equipment? A first-day checklist

Most beginners start by asking where to buy brewing equipment. Ask the reverse first: how many litres per batch, bottles or draft, and do you have space to keep beer cold? Once you know, the homebrew shopping list gets short and clear.

The minimum kit for a first batch

• Brewer: a 40–70L all-in-one brewer mashes, lauters and boils in one vessel — the tidiest option at home.
• Chilling: a stainless wort chiller brings the temperature down fast and limits infection risk.
• Fermenting: a fermenter (PET or a conical stainless one) with a dump valve and airtight lid.
• Measuring: a hydrometer or Brix refractometer to work out ABV, plus a digital thermometer.
• Cleaning: an alkaline cleaner (PBW-type) for residue and no-rinse Star San to sanitise.

304 stainless or plastic?

Food-grade PET is cheap, light and see-through — fine for beginners. 304 stainless lasts longer, handles pressure, tolerates strong cleaners and takes Tri-clamp fittings for later upgrades. If you plan to keep brewing, a conical 304 fermenter pays off with easy yeast dumps and sampling.

Six questions to ask the seller

1. Does the brewer run multi-step mash programs and have a recirculation pump?
2. Is the body genuine 304 stainless, and is there material documentation?
3. How long is the warranty, where is it serviced, are spare gaskets, valves and elements stocked?
4. In stock or made to order, how long is delivery, do they ship nationwide?
5. Does the seller brew themselves and help with your first batch?
6. If you move to kegs and a kegerator later, will the parts fit together?
